Moosehead Lake is the largest lake in Maine, and is beautiful in any season. We have camped on its shores in the summer and walked on its ice-covered water in winter. This spectacular setting sun turned the ice into shades of pink, yellow and blue as we snowshoed across it one winter's day. There was a deep tone below as we planted our feet, with the counterpoint of high squeaks from the cold surface snow being compressed. A veritable symphony as we listened to make sure we didn't hear the cracking that means ice too thin to cross. A pickup and a few fishing shacks in the other direction helped reassure us, but we had to be careful nonetheless. Because you never know.
