The M-37 highway runs up the spine of the Old Mission Peninsula in Michigan. Along its sides spread orchards, mostly cherry, and vineyards. For our family it's the doorway to the place we go each summer, along the shore of Lake Michigan. Our children are the fifth generation to be lucky enough to visit the strip of woods and water that great-grandparents bought when it was recently logged over. Much of the peninsula has been and continues to be covered with farms, mostly small and family owned. The scent of cherries ripe in the sun is a wonderful way to celebrate summer.
