Mt. Katahdin. It rises from the vast northern wilderness of Maine at the very end of the Appalachian Trail and offers a breathtaking view of the world. Revered by the Penobscot people, they called it Greatest Mountain and saw it as a holy place of birth and spiritual enlightenment. I think anyone who has climbed to the peak would agree. I have not. Yet. But one day I would love to climb to the top of the mountain (4,000 vertical feet) and stand where so many have gone before to take in the utter beauty of the landscape, feeling the exhilaration of making it to the top. My husband and son climbed it, and we have all camped around the base of it. The whole area is stunning and beautiful. If I leave the goal too long, I may not be able to make the climb. If that happens, I will enjoy the stories of those who have made it and I will admire the mountain from a distance. At my time of life, some dreams are going to remain just that. And that is okay. More than okay. The dreaming of them is its own joy. Mt. Katahdin.
