While driving down a back road in Quebec this winter, I saw this red barn against a snowy landscape. I love red barns, their color bright and cheerful against all backgrounds. I've read that red barns were a serendipitous result of farmers applying a protective varnish to the wood as far back as the 1700's. The ingredients of the varnish reacted to sunlight and produced the red that became associated with barns. Now it is the color of paint applied for similar protective reasons. All this is fun to know, but what I see is a bright and cheerful spot of color in a blue field of snow, or a green field, depending on the season. It makes me happy.
