In Cushing, Maine, there is a beautiful preserve where the artist Bernard Langlais lived and had his studio. The massive wood sculptures he created once dotted the entire landscape. And, there are still many of his amazing pieces in situ. We went looking for the preserve before it was opened to the public, and the workers told us to go ahead and explore. It was amazing. We got to see preservationists working on the pieces that had fallen into disrepair. When I look at his work, I see and appreciate his tongue-in-cheek humor and his whimsy. The grounds are also lovely. This bridge is over a small creek that runs through the property. I loved the simplicity of it, and the play of light and shadow in the wild flowers that grew all around it. If you are ever near Cushing, be sure to look for this gem of a place. You won't be sorry.
