Moving to Long Island from Maine was a big geographical change. We were used to driving just an hour or two and finding ourselves in wide-open wilderness. Long Island is also beautiful, but the vast landscape is replaced with smaller, subtler pockets of beauty. One such "pocket" is the Mashomack preserve on Shelter Island. In the preserve it feels as if you are a world apart from everyone else, helped by the need to take a ferry to get there. The quiet and beauty filled me with joy and a sense of peace. I enjoyed every, albeit cold, moment. Moving to Long Island from Maine was a big geographical change. We were used to driving just an hour or two and finding ourselves in wide-open wilderness.
