Today, Maria Ressa is a Professor of Professional Practice in the School of International and Public Affairs at Columbia University and has been a Distinguished Fellow at Columbia's new Institute of Global Politics since fall of 2023. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EuFHTcItMOs A few minutes of a recent interview about the role disinformation, AI and autocracy in the degradation of democracy.
Maria Ressa often says, "Without facts, you can’t have truth. Without truth, you can’t have trust. Without trust, we have no shared reality, no democracy, and it becomes impossible to deal with our world’s existential problems...". This 2021 Nobel Peace Prize Laureate, Maria Ressa, is an investigative journalist and the co-founder of the on-line news site, Rappler. This Filipina woman, Maria is a fierce fighter for freedom, democracy and truth. Her own government and President Rodrigo Duterte have falsely arrested her many times for doing her job. She speaks compassionately of her friends and fellow journalists who have lost their lives in their pursuit of truthful reporting. She could loose her life too. My strongest take away from Maria’s speeches and writings is the subject of disinformation. It seems appropriate right now to bring up the etymology of the word, disinformation. “The English word disinformation, is a translation of the Russian ?????????????, transliterated as dezinformatsiya. Where misinformation refers to inaccuracies that stem from error, disinformation is a deliberate falsehood promulgated by design.” It is well known that there have been disinformation campaigns and organizations in the Soviet Union and Russia for decades. But there are many other countries, including the United Sates, that participate in disinformation campaigns. If citizens do not have a truthful reality from which to decide how to vote in the elections, then we are not free and empowered to improve and protect our lives at home and globally. The U.S. First Amendment protects our rights to freedom of speech, the press, assembly, and the right to petition the Government for a redress of grievances. But should it be freedom without restraint? Will democracy survive the rapid and unfettered dissemination of contrived fake news intended to mislead and destroy the checks and balances built into our constitution of the United States? Is not the government to protect us from enemies from outside and within our borders? Maria strongly believes that platforms like Facebook and others must be regulated as we do with all industries. Disinformation promotes divisiveness, anger and hatred and it is sold to the highest bidder in order to control society. Without facts, you can’t have truth… Today, Maria Ressa is a Professor of Professional Practice in the School of International and Public Affairs at Columbia University and has been a Distinguished Fellow at Columbia's new Institute of Global Politics since fall of 2023. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EuFHTcItMOs A few minutes of a recent interview about the role disinformation, AI and autocracy in the degradation of democracy.
