This woman, wife, mother, lawyer, writer and teacher was found guilty of “disturbing public opinion” in her own country of Iran in 2000. She was sentenced to prison, barred from practicing law for 5 years and fined. By 2009, Shirin Ebadi went into exile in the United Kingdom where she still lives and continues her work on human rights with a special interest in the rights of women and children. She has published over 70 articles and 13 books dedicated to various aspects of human rights.
It is easy to take our freedoms and rights in the United States for granted. Our First Amendment rights allow us to express our thoughts and ideas freely. It may get messy and ugly sometimes but we are free to speak or not to speak. The job of protecting these rights for everyone will never be finished.
Shirin Ebadi is the first female Peace Prize Laureate from the Islamic world and first woman Laureate from a Muslim country. She is also one of Iran’s first female judges. In her Nobel lecture she states this. A human being divested of all dignity, a human being deprived of human rights, a human being gripped by starvation, a human being beaten by famine, war and illness, a humiliated human being and a plundered human being is not in any position or state to recover the rights he or she has lost.
She also states in another speech, You cannot destroy an ideology with bombs. Education is key in preventing war, reducing suffering and protecting everyone’s dignity and human rights.
