This is my second look at this scene, thus the "2" in the title. Beech trees are the kind with rather smooth whitish bark. People often choose them to carve their initials. Here is some tree terminology: A snag is a standing dead tree. Owls like them as good places to nest. They fall over eventually, but they may stand for many years. A widowmaker is a large dead branch on a live tree that could fall at any time and kill you. Visually speaking, there is something proud in the standing attitude of this tree as it bursts through the undergrowth and as if it is defiantly refusing to fall and still larger than all the trees around it. I tried to emphasize that in this painting. This is my second look at this scene, thus the "2" in the title. Beech trees are the kind with rather smooth whitish bark.
