This small piece started as a "splash painting." That's where I start on a
large sheet of watercolor paper or illustration board. I usually pick
three colors and I go to work, partially wetting the surface and
applying paint in usually thin layers and various techniques, like
spatter, sponge, drip, exploded drops (using a straw), latex resist,
foil paint transfer, masked lifts, direct painting with brush, etc.
Then after several rounds and paint overs, I start looking, using a pair
of "L's" to frame off different smaller compositions within the whole.
I outline those with tape. I complete the little composition, using
the same colors, sometimes adding watercolor pencil touches to edges,
etc. That's where this little gem came from. It looked kinda "planetary" or outer space-like, so I call it "Orbs." Enjoy!
