This is my favorite vase. When filled with water it becomes a cylindrical lens and concentrates light in a thin streak. I like the way it magnifies/distorts/reverses the background colors. All art is abstract, even if it's of a realistic subject. The word "abstract" means "pulled from" or "drawn from." What we're talking about is "design" -- the creative use of abstract elements to create a compelling unified visual energy field, often called "a painting."
Design in Michelangelo's estimation, rules all human endeavors: "The science of design is the source and essence of painting, sculpture, architecture. Sometimes it seems to me that all the works of the human brain and hand are either design itself or a branch of that art." -- Michelangelo (In this quote, Michelangelo calls design a science, and art, incorporating both the left-brain and right-brain modes.)
