At the far east end of Galveston there’s a stretch of beach at R.A. Apffel Park past the pavilion that has some beautifully natural dunes. I love the wave like motion of the sand and the salt grasses and sea oats dotting the sand. This is the East Beach I love. Many consider East Beach to be the party beach in Galveston and there’s certainly plenty of partying here later in the day and evenings, but if you get here for sunrise it’s often only occupied by birders and nature lovers and the spectacular sunrise views are always worth it. This tiny gouache painting was inspired by the first glimpse of sunrise over the East Beach dunes. “Sunrise, East Beach” is a 4” X 4” gouache painting on paper.
