With camera in-hand, I headed to a local nature center on a brisk and sunny winter afternoon. The familiar pond glowed in the late afternoon sun. I studied my reference and decided what I liked most about the scene was the intense contrast of the light against the dark back-lit grasses. To paint this piece, I covered the entire surface with acrylic inks defining where the grasses would be. After the ink dried, I went about the process of layering soft pastels over the ink.
