I did this informal pair of quick daily paintings at the same time to compare two toning options. One is on black toned paper, one is on gray toned paper. The one on the left has a little more color woven in; the one on the right was so serenely neutral I didn't want to detract from the neutrals with color. My husband likes the one on the left because there's more contrast. I think I like the soft neutral one more. Probably, the ideal result would be somewhere in between in value range. Sorry these are not nicely cropped, this was an experimental day!
