I'm in the middle of taking a great online workshop by Zoey Frank called Experimental Approaches to Color. This week's assignment was to paint a still life with complementary or near complementary colors. Because I've been using phthalo blue during all my previous assignments, I was supposed to carry this paint through here. So in this painting, I used phthalo blue, plus a few nearby colors (ultramarine and cobalt turquoise), and then I used transparent orange for my complementary color. I set up the actual still life with mostly blues and oranges in order to make the color matching a bit easier for me. That blue glass is an almost perfect match for ultramarine blue! I did leave myself a little challenge with the cloth, though. This cloth is all in gray in reality. I tried to neutralize the blue paints with the orange, but the closest I could get was a dull green. I think it works anyway in regard to color harmony. I'm finding these exercises in color really satisfying, and I'm also glad I found an excuse to paint citrus again.
