This painting came to life after I'd been looking for vintage Valentine's Day cards and found these adorable watercolor kitties on a card from the 40's. LOVED their perfect little faces. I decided to create a design around them and play with different styles, contrasting their subtle brushwork with a more modern, illustrative approach to the birds on the branch above them. The line drawing style of the birds is meant to suggest they are a mere figment of the kittens' imagination, wishful thinking, out of reach. The inclusion of a couple Sweethearts candies resting at the bottom of the composition is just a humorous way of driving the point home. This painting is available through Elliott Fouts Gallery.
