Recently Sarah Sedwick posted a still life with three yellow onions on her Instagram. She painted it simultaneously with Chris Long: Sarah painted from life, and Chris used Sarah's photo reference. The two artists have very different painting styles, but I love them both. I admire Sarah's clean and crisp brushwork and her warm colors, and I like Chris's bold paint application and the way he uses palette knives in his works. Sarah posted both wonderful paintings and the photo reference inviting everyone to use it for their own still lifes. For a few moments I thought about painting Sarah's onions, but then changed my mind and decided to paint from life, as it's so much more interesting than using a photo. When I went to pick up my own onions, it turned out I only have red ones. So, here they go!
