Part of Circle of Life series - where I painted 12 animals, each representing an animal associated with zodiac sign. Painting this rooster was a delight in painting the tight likeness of the portrait. I challenged myself to capture the details without the distraction of the background. So I chose the black gessoed canvas and utilized its perfect black finish to paint the portrait against. I soon realized the hard part - having no background to work with, it was necessary to get all details perfect as the focus was sharpened at the subject. I worked slowly and carefully and stepped back quite often. At the end, I was pleased how it turned out.
