Think (even) Smaller!

Painting miniatures can be a bit like dancing in a closet, but the centuries old practice is alive and well. Miniatures have a long and interesting history, make great exercises, and are very collectible. The ACEO (2.5 x 3.5) market continues to blossom, and some galleries host yearly competitions and exclusive exhibitions dedicated to miniature works.

Employ broad strokes for quick and immediately satisfying paintings, or get out your magnifying glass and double oughts. It is possible to pack as much relative information in a miniature as in any larger painting...a theory limited mostly by your eyesight and your patience.

For this challenge, we'll stick to the popular ACEO format of 2.5 x 3.5 inches. There are commercially available supports that are pre-sized. Alternatively, you can use a piece of loose canvas cut to size and taped to a board, or simply tape off the appropriate space on a larger substrate and trim it afterward.

Choosing the subject is an important part of the exercise, so you're on your own. (Beginners might want to choose a single object of actual size...like a grape, or a coin.)

Have fun!
