This fundraiser's theme is Mom and is sponsored by artist Kristina Laurendi Havens. We often take for granted our access to decent, life-saving medical care during pregnancy and delivery, but many mothers around the world are not so lucky

The need: Every 90 seconds, a women dies from childbirth. Fully 90% of those deaths are preventable. The Aid organization Every Mother Counts is training midwives in Afghanistan, opening health clinics in the Democratic Republic of Congo and shipping unused medical supplies to South Sudan. These are tangible, practical projects designed to combat maternal mortality and injuries worldwide.

Who's who in this fundraiser:
  • Kristina Laurendi Havens - a DPW artist
  • Heather Armstrong (aka Dooce) - one of the most popular bloggers in the world
  • Every Mother Counts - a non-profit dedicated to improving maternal health and co-founded by Christy Turlington, director of the award-winning documentary, No Woman, No Cry
  • The Greater Daily Paintworks community of members, buyers, and visitors - this means you!

The backstory: Kristina painted a portrait of Heather’s daughter and shared it with her. She then became interested in Every Mother Counts after Heather documented her trip to Bangladesh with the organization on her blog. Kristina asked if she could paint some of Heather’s photographs and use the proceeds from their sale for Team Every Mother Count's NYC marathon fundraiser in November and Heather happily aggreed.

How you can participate, donate, and help: On Nov. 6th, Heather Armstrong, Christy Turlington and seven other team members will run the ING NYC marathon to raise money for Every Mother Counts projects.
Post your painting for sale and donate the proceeds to Heather's team by Thursday, Nov 3rd - or donate directly to Every Mother Counts after Nov 3rd.

The theme is Mom and your painting can be... "objects or people - her favorite necklace, favorite food, perhaps even more whimsical like a big pot and little pot, a mother and child, etc."

As with all our Challenge Fundraisers, 100 percent of the proceeds from the sale of the paintings is to be donated directly by the artist, minus shipping and handling and material costs.

When you submit your painting to the challenge, it will be sold through a 7 day long DPW auction, which will be relisted indefinately until sold unless you choose to hide the painting. There are no fees or auction commissions charged for participation in this challenge
In Kristina's words from her blog: "...I spent many restless nights running her photos thru my head, dreaming of ways to translate her photos into paintings. ...It made me realize and appreciate how lucky I was before, during, and after my two pregnancies.

Every Mother Counts. I want to count. Women around the world want to count. Their Children want to count. Their husbands want them to count. This auction could be small, it could be huge - who knows? EVERY LITTLE BIT COUNTS, when it comes from the sense that You are part of Something Bigger."

In Heather’s words from her blog: "...This is the crux of how I think massive change can happen: not all of us can get on a plane to Africa to train a midwife or build a well. Those who can just need the resources. Here is an artist wanting to make some bit of difference, and she can do so by doing what she does best. ...The portraits (five in all) are stunning... I am so honored to be even marginally associated with this."
