"Colour and brushstroke are key to my work, I'm a colourist at heart".

My work is full of vibrant colour and driven by my search to discover my own voice. I have come to realise that I am an emotional artist expressing myself through colour and brushstroke; it’s a relationship between my subject and myself for the duration of that work. No two works will have the same response or be created in the same time frame and this is what makes each work unique and exciting to me as an artist.

I was born in Gibraltar in 1967 and have always loved painting. I have fond memories of drawing and painting with my Father as a child. I studied art at school to A level standard. With no formal training, in 2008 after having taken a 13-year break from painting to raise my sons I returned to the easel by attending some adult classes locally with a newfound love of painting and haven’t stopped since! This led to my first Solo Exhibition in 2011 “Allá Prima” which was a sell out. Since then, I have exhibited in numerous solo, group and judged exhibitions mainly in Gibraltar but also in London at the Clarendon Fine Art Gallery in Mayfair and at The Mall Galleries in London.

There are paintings of mine all over the world both in private and corporate collections.

My preferred medium is oils but I also enjoy gouache, pastels and water colour pencils. When it comes to subject matter, I am driven by colour, composition, design, light and contrast. Subjects I paint come from my own personal experiences and observations and I simply paint what I enjoy. Living in Gibraltar I am blessed with the amount of light, colour and cultural life both here, in neighbouring Andalucía and Morocco. This can range from the colourful markets in Tangier filled with aromatic spices, hand painted ceramics, babouches and lanterns in Morocco to the landscapes, fish, and beaches in Spain and Gibraltar.

I’m also fascinated by humble fruit, vegetables, and confectionary that we all know and love as there is so much colour and beauty to capture in everyday objects and the space they occupy both in our everyday lives and in our memories. I like to transform the simplicity of these common objects into paintings which are emotionally rich and expressive which can connect with you and bring some joy and happiness into your lives.

I now have my website up and running which you can visit at www.carolinecanessa.com.
