My training at Sir John Cass, London was followed by several years in intelligence. The greater part of my art career was spent as one of the country's leading military artists and I am an expert on military uniforms through the centuries with a particular interest in the effects of campaigns on the dress. I worked on official commissions for military units and museums, for collectors worldwide and contributed maps and illustrations to history books and wrote articles for specialist journals. Sculptors of statues/statuettes have frequently called upon my knowledge and model soldier makers have modelled their work on figures in my paintings.
Now I paints many other subjects, in several styles and media, exhibiting widely in London (over the years with the ROI, RSMA, SWA, RBA etc), the home counties and abroad. For 6 years I chaired the Armed Forces Art Society (the first woman and first not to have been in uniform). My particular areas of interest are marine subjects and people and places at home and overseas. With my family, I lived in Oman for 3 years and the country and its people remain an abiding inspiration for my work.
Home is in Hampshire and I am a member of several national and local art societies. I also judge art exhibitions and write articles on various aspects of painting as a hobby or profession. I am lucky enough to have won many awards at exhibition and have been the subject of study by GCSE and A Level students on several occasions.
I am a Freeman of the City of London and of the Worshipful Company of Painter-Stainers.
I find it very hard to sum up in a few words my art, its style and inspiration, my interpretation of light and colour. All I know is that I get a physical craving, particularly when it's not possible to access time or art materials. I carry a notebook everywhere, jotting down thoughts, notes on colours, light direction, random ideas etc. I'm for ever looking up at the sky and the many colours to be found in clouds! Having devoted so many years to work that was more illustrative, I am always trying to loosen up and perhaps that is why my style is constantly evolving. Inspiration is all around and I rather wish I had spent more years developing my non-military side - fewer committee meetings for a start!
I believe there is a genetic link to the subjects I have painted over the years. Many ancestors were in the armed services, several were artists, explorers and one grandfather, also an artist, built his own racing yachts. So I should not be surprised at what I choose to paint now and in the future............!
