Elizabeth and I love to have fresh flowers in the house. Our favorites are Stargazer Lilies and Sunflowers. Of course, I'm a fan of Van Gogh's wonderful series of sunflower paintings, but I don't paint flowers often. When I do, I like to catch them a little past their prime, when the leaves and petals start to twist and writhe and lose some of their brightness. They seem more human. Some people fight aging with everything they can, from creams and makeup to injections and surgery. Flowers age gracefully. I think growing old is beautiful. Perhaps we could all learn a lesson from these beautiful old sunflowers.

"Fading" is an unframed 8" x 8" gouache painting on paper. I add a light coat of varnish to my gouache paintings which gives them a slight sheen and helps protect the surface. Just pop it into a frame of your choosing to hang.
